Private Luxury Mountain Lodge

The Lodge

Designed with romance in mind, this four-suite luxury boutique lodge offers 32 private acres of wooded walking paths and scenic vistas nestled under the peak of Elmore Mountain.

Enjoy sublime views of the surrounding countryside including the Lamoille Valley, Mt. Mansfield and the iconic profile of the Green Mountain range.

The Lodge is appointed with contemporary accents and has some notably exciting features including sweeping mountain views, private balconies, and authentic Vermont-crafted architecture highlighting local artists and producers.

History

Construction of The Lodge began in 1999 and was completed over a three-year period. Prior to construction, months were spent in the design of the main house and grounds.

Guests often ask where we found some of the more unique doors, windows and light fixtures that are focal points of the Inn. We're excited to note that nearly all of our materials and furnishings were milled, quarried, hand-crafted or salvaged from Vermont, northern New England and Quebec. Each piece truly reflects local and regional culture and history.

Welcome to Stowe Meadows

The main entrance door was salvaged from a Vermont farm house and continues to use the original handle, hinge and locking hardware originally designed for the door circa 1732. This door has been restored to its original beauty and welcomes all of our guests to The Lodge.

Just beyond the main entrance, guests cross a slate-floored vestibule to enter through double antique French doors recovered from a historical building in Craftsbury, Vermont. These doors, circa 1821, were residential entrance doors and still have the original mail slot, hinges and latch locks attached.

Hand-Hewn Beams Set a Rustic and Warm Stage

Hand-hewn beams reclaimed from one of the oldest estate residences and barns in Vermont form the focal point of the main floor gathering room and guest den. The estate, formerly known as "Birchview" was scheduled for deconstruction. The beams were transferred to the current Lodge site prior to finalizing interior plans. Our architect selected specific beams to complement design and structural elements of our unique home.

The 12”x12” cedar beams prominent in the main living areas of The Lodge are unique in design today, but were commonly used in construction in the late 1700’s and early 1800’s.

All ceiling beams in the three vaulted gathering rooms are knotty pine and oak and were reclaimed from across the region. The beams also create our nine foot long mantel surrounding the main gathering room's fireplace.

Reclaiming and Restoring History - The Crawford House Hotel, NH

Guests who reserve the Master Suite see a wonderful piece of New Hampshire history in the commanding  eleven foot tall bedroom entrance door.

The door was reclaimed from the famous turn of the century Crawford House Hotel in Crawford Notch, White Mountains, NH. The hotel, first built in 1828, is noted on the NH Historical Society’s record as a Historic Landmark.

After fires in 1854 and 1858 destroyed the original inn and its replacement, the third and final Crawford House was built and opened for the 1859 season.

Though destroyed by fire in 1977, the Hotel earned it’s famous reputation as a luxury hotel in the late 1800's. We acquired the door for room number 121 at the Crawford House and lovingly restored it to it's glory.

(excerpt from the NH Historical Society website)

“Major hotels such as the Crawford House, Fabyan House, Profile House, the Maplewood, the Waumbek, and the Glen House each had its own train station or livery service and its own versions of comfort and elegance: gas lighting, fancy dining, lawn tennis, coaching parades, and mountain guides. Each of these establishments had a guest capacity of 400 or more, each was built entirely of wood, and each was eventually destroyed by fire.“

Another highlight of the Lodge are the massive stone fireplaces in each of the guest dens and in the Master Suite. The mantels for two fireplace were recovered from centuries-old estates and restored to their original grandeur. The fireplaces are lit each evening from September through April. Guests can enjoy hot-chocolate, wine or after dinner drinks beside the fire…or toast marshmallows (always stocked in each den with all roasting accouterments).

Lighting the Way with High Beams

Finally, many guests ask us about the light fixtures and chandeliers throughout the Lodge. We'd like to offer a shout out to our friends at High Beams in Sutton, Vermont who created these amazing and unique works of art.

Each fixture, wall sconce and lamp shade reflects the essence of Vermont.  From cedar tendrils and ferns to beech leaves, pine needles and white birch bark, these fixtures are hand-crafted to reflect and complement our Inn.

Caroline & Erich DeVore, Owners

Our vision for Stowe Meadows continues to evolve. The longer we're here in Vermont, the more we find to share with visitors.

In 2009 we launched Stowe Meadows Bakery providing organic, Gluten-Free products to more than 15 New England grocers.

In 2017 we launched Stowe Meadows Farm. Our organic, pasture-raised chicken and duck eggs are staples of our menu and can be found in local markets.
